Title: LBSC 4 & 6-wheel Carriages
Post by: Kalinowski on Feb 19 2010 13:29
Hello John,
A jolly good suggestion. To start the ball rolling then, I would like to float the first  proposal to build some 4 wheel and possibly 6 wheel Stroudley era coaches. A number of members have the battery model of the Terrier, but no coaches to go with them. So I think that there might be quite a few folk interested.

I have an A3 size copy of the original GA detailed drawings obtained from "The Engineer" dated 1875/77 for the basic 4 wheel coach. The Bluebell also have full size 4 and 6 wheel bodies that can be measured up if we ask them nicely.

The underframes are easy to make, I made one up some years ago, but the bodies are a problem as the window framing is flimsy and the bodies have a lot of fancy beading. I am not sure if resin, etched brass or laser cut wood is the answer.

Thoughts ?

Peter,

Great idea and excellent choice of prototype - could hardly have been better.  Don't think I'd buy one (but you never know) but happy to help in anyway to bring it about.

I'm really surprised that there has been no further comment on Peter's idea.  We seem to have an active contingent south of the Thames, there is said to be a shortage of carriages in Gauge 3, these lasted into preservation so should suit all periods ..... so why no comments?

Are they too small?  too old?  wrong railway? ..... ?

I agree with Mike, considering the number of A1/A1X 'Terriers there are out there, I too am surprised there has been no reaction.

The 4-wheel variety were formed into close-coupled sets for the South London Line services out of London Bridge and Victoria during the Victorian period and then gravitated to lesser services.

For those followers of 'I.O.W.' practice, they were used into Southern days on the Island.

If you participate in this Forum and know fellow Society members who do not, then please alert them to this project.

If this one 'falls flat on its face', it is likely to deter anybody else coming forward with other projects......and we shall be back at 'square one'!

Regards,
John.

OK chaps,
I need at least 6 coaches of the 4 wheel type to start with. Four will need to be the standard 3rd class 5 compartment type and the other two of the brake third with the look out at one end. The GA drawings that I have from "The Engineer" can suite either the close coupled approach or with buffers at each end.

I do not have access to the 3D CAD, but if drawings can be generated I would value your assistance in creating the masters in either etch brass or resin or wood. Wood would be good as the originals were in mahogany , however I suspect they would be rather fragile to handle. I made up a body some years back in real mahogany but this warped badly and was very fiddly to make, so I abandoned that attempt.

regards Peter

Peter,

I'm not experienced with 3D CAD, but suspect 2D CAD would be adequate for your purpose, and am happy to assist with that.

Etched brass I have experience of and can help with drawings - look at my carriage on Saturday.

Laser cut wood I have no personal experience of, but Peter Wood will be there on Saturday and he has http://www.peterwoodswagons.co.uk/page3.html.

Resin requires masters either made the hard way by hand, or with 3D CAD.  For 3D CAD Francis Leach will be there on Saturday.

All in all, I think you'll have a busy day on Saturday!

Hi Peter as you are probably aware I have built a set of stroudley 4 wheel coaches (set496)from the Bachmann Annie and Clarabel coaches. If you want some technical information on them I am happy to forward it on to you. I have also built a second set for another Gauge 3 member (set495) for a Mr Dave Olden. And yes they both happen to be IOW sets.
