Title: GWR Armstrong Class Loco
Post by: 753 on Jul 23 2023 12:42
There are several handsome 4-4-0 loco designs from the 19th century but for my money the GWR Armstrong Class engines are more elegant than the others.
I built one of these engines years ago in G1, I think one should be represented in G3. As I have the drawings for G1 it is easy to scale them up to G3.
I started with the wheels, they are machined from 8mm ali plate.

The Armstrong chassis are taking shape, the frames are made from 1.5mm steel and the outside cranks are bolted to the axles through a recessed hole which in turn is blanked by steel discs.

Progress on the Armstrong, the springs are engraved from ali, the bogie axle boxes are 3D resin prints much sharper detail than castings with same ali springs.
The 300rpm motor has internal gearbox and drives axle via nylon bevel gears at a 2:1 ratio giving a good speed range.

A very graceful/elegant loco with plenty of flowing curves to complicate construction!
Will look very nice finished in the Edwardian livery.

Further progress on the Armstrong, the more detail you add the more complex the fitting. The backhead and cab detail is next.

The Armstrong is complete, and looking resplendent. It is my 75th birthday this weekend and what better gift could a G W R man hope for than a G3 Armstrong.
Cheers

Absolutely beautiful - so clean, crisp and with an eagerness to gallop westwards.

What will it pull?
