Title: GRS 8750 pannier tank kit
Post by: fridge on Nov 26 2010 14:53
Can anyone help, please?

a) what size of allen key do I need to fix the gearbox to the axle?

b) on the kit, the boiler bands continue on to the tank. I have searched through loads of photos but can find no evidence that this is correct and have no recollection of such a feature on the prototype. Can anyone confirm whether this correct?

Many thanks,
Robin

Welcome to the forum Robin.

I have not built the 8750 kit but the GRS kits I have built required a 1.3mm A/F(across flats) Allen key.
Mine came from www.modelfixings.co.uk

Boiler bands did not run onto the pannier tops (I am looking at a very clear photo of the tank tops of 3750 taken from a bridge). In fact the photo suggests that this loco (which has a top feed) has no boiler bands as such and that the shaped plating (which covers the small summit of the boiler and firebox which protrudes above the tanks) is either riveted or bolted directly to the top of the tanks. There are brackets and lines of rivets along seams but no signs of bands.

John.

John,

Thanks very much for the information, especially since my chosen prototype is from the same batch of locos that you mention. I have ordered the allen key from Model Fixings and look forward to getting on with the job.
