Please, can anyone help with information / photos of a loco from this numbering series in LMS days?
The GRS kit for this loco is supplied with plain (not fluted) coupling rods which were fitted only to the final order for these Fowler-designed locos.
Another variation was the tenders : Although of Fowler 3,500 gallon design (as were those fitted to the earlier LMS-built locos.) many were taken from Jubilee 5XP locos when they received new Stanier tenders and differed from the earlier 4F tenders.
The later tenders were fitted with full height coal doors which gave the fireman access to the tender coal space (earlier tenders had just a "hole" from which to shovel coal).
Another variation was the fitting of tender coal rails and the positioning of the tank vent columns. On early tenders the vents were in the coal space but on many later tenders they were positioned either side of the water scoop dome to avoid being fouled by the increased coaling height when rails were added.
Does anyone have a clear photo of a loco in the number range 4562 to 4606 which shows the arrangement of tender fittings?
I have been through dozens of 4F photos but very few illustrate these later (Stanier period) locos. Those I have found are late BR period and are front three-quarter views which show little of the tender details.
There is a series of books "LMS Locomotive Profile :......", one volume of which covers the 4F but precisely how much detail is given I have no idea.
Does anyone have this book (or another in the same series) and does it give full construction details, tender pairings, etc.?
John.
Sorry, can't help. The profile is advertised by Martin Bott for £18.50, so may be worth getting anyway.
Mike
Hello John and All
For a slightly diffrent way round if your 4F has an Ex Jubilee tender , Try having a look in some of the Eric Treacey books . Bank Hall shed in Liverpool put Jubilees through the Calder Valley with Fowler tenders and they where photographed from high angels at Sowerby Bridge . Pennine Steam may also help .
