where can I get drawings/ details for construction of G3 Flying Scotsman. Any help much appreciated. I have a part completed project and am currently completing the chassis bought part made. It will be RC and battery driven

I assume this is the Collins/Weise version of the 'Flying Scotsman' Dave, as published in Model Engineer some years ago.

If so you can purchase a full set of drawings here:

However, they are not that cheap and if you are going to build an 'electric' version of the engine I would have thought that quite a lot of the detail wouldn't be too much use to you (boiler/fitting details etc).

I have both the original ME articles and the engineering drawings, so if you have some specific parts you want to build to the original plan/dimensions then let me know via PM. But it might be worth checking a scale GA of the loco to see if any liberties were taken to get a workable live steam loco - bigger boiler etc (I've never actually checked the key dimensions on my frame).

Thanks a lot Ian, I`m not sure if this is the Collins/Weisse one. I have a brass boiler and cab (cladding) chassis with wheels and nearly complete tender. need to fit cylinders & coupling rods etc (have these in unmachined condition). As far as I can see the dimensions are all correct. I`ve been promised an `O` gauge GA drawing so I`ll double check dimensions on that. As you say it`s a lot of money for the drawings if I don`t need all that detail. Would I still be able to get copies of ME articles

No sooner posted my reply and the "O" drawing came to hand (Skinley No 158 Windsor Lad ) Quick check, all dims. seem OK but a few odds. Boiler/firebox assy. one piece in brass, overlapped and rivetted underneath. How would a boiler have been fitted? So it`s not steam Why then make allowance for hand pump in tender. Also tender has a nice corridor fitting at back but rivetted full width coal slope/ water tank and no corridor and no allowance for this in front plate of tender! Why the expense of bronze cylinders. All work done to a good standard so a bit of a mystery. I think this has collected some dust over the years. I`m new to G3 but I`ve rebuilt a Grange (battery driven and R.C.) also from a Station Road Steam project so I`ll tackle this one much as I did that.  Many thanks for your help   Dave

Well it could have been built as a 'half-way house' Dave.

In other words, it was intended either as a display or (perhaps) an electric loco but with the option to upgrade to live steam later if the builder wanted to do so.

We have a Member (Ken C) who has done exactly that on one of his locos, a GWR 51XX (there photos of it in the September 2010 Newsletter if anyones interested). It's pretty much fully functional from a live steam point of view (motion/cylinders etc) but there's a dummy boiler and he's fitted an electric motor on the rear carrying axle. The loco can be upgraded to live steam (pretty much just by the addittion of a boiler) if Ken chooses to do so. Maybe your loco was built with something similar in mind.
