Burning Ambition

As several people will know who have met my son -his ambition is to have a working 5BEL set... Several attempts have been produced over the years -the last one a "theoretical study" using Mike Williams GER wagon base as a bogie.

However the Gods have smiled and his school is now the owner of a 60Watt Laser cutter. The past week (AKA school holiday) have been spent working out what can be done. The Cutter takes PNG format files and this is what we have been working with. Red is CUT. Black is ENGRAVE. The carriages will run on 9 feet G3S carriage bogies and the power cars will use the Chris Barron axle hung motors as in the "Peak" design. The plans (as such) use A2 sheets of 3mm Laser ply and 1mm frosted acrylic for glass work.

I doubt very much they are that accurate as they were "drafted" from photos and specs from Ian Allen to guide scaling.... But we think they look "presentable". The carriages are made on two halves and then stuck together, the sides re-enforced/joined by strips of 5mm sq pine.

For what it is worth -here they are. No guarentee is made for accuracy or anything else!!! Feel free to mangle/adapt them as you wish.

Sounds like a fine use for a school laser cutter - much better than making dust-collecting nick-nacks that parents try to look pleased about receiving ...... ;)

Anyhow - looking forward to seeing the results.
When do you start taking orders for laser cut parts? ::)

I like your style Andy - let the school sell parts to recover the cost of the laser cutter and reduce the burden on the taxpayer!

Very keen to get cracking on files 4 & file 7 to knock out a typical Pullman as a trial exercise.
If it goes pear shaped & I give up it will make a great grounded coach body.
This must not detract from completing the Peak though which is currently undergoing track trials.

WOW!

Well done to you and your son for this project, I was able to travel on 3052 a week before they were withdrawn and somewhere should have the Pullman Car Company supplementary ticket. I do hope the unit will be finished in brown and cream.

Also looking forward to the real thing emerging from Barrow Hill.

I have the old wren Brighton Belle set which when I acquired it came with a duplicate coach in the guise of Aries. So in theory it could run as a 6BEL but never has. Nice model and very interesting project. Incidentally have you ever heard of the film footage London-Brighton in 4 minutes. It was filmed from the front of a 5BEL. At all the stations everyone appears to be walking around like on an episode of Trumpton. Quite amusing

Not quite what I meant, Mike - and I don't believe that schools actually see the capital cost of such kit to be concerned about it. It tends to be included in a funding package associated with the curriculum that the government of the day is touting. Though I could be wrong.....

But enough of politics - lets get on and play trains, taking advantage of whatever facilities we can to achieve our goals.
