I cant wait to see 10000 & 10001 on Blackgang. Double heading the passenger train, Hmmmm

Mark,

At the best with Kinder Scout the train would depart the fiddle yard with a 2 coach train & arrive filling the whole length of Blackgang station platform.

The Twins would be in charge of a single coach however for the same total length.

The remaining thought about this is that The Twins did during a period in their lives operate on the Southern region of British railways. So I guess it would be like a coming home. Even though they were Derby built.

Current progress is marching on a pace.
As can be seen from the photo both body frames are glued up & ready to accept the side & roof panelling.
The cabs are in progress, one front nose has been shaped. The fret machine has cut out all that can be seen & more with only 2 blades broken, now that for me is an achievement.
The motor mount CADs for the traction motors  are with MEL for laser cutting, as are the 2 x chassis sub frame plate & 4 x turntable adapter plates. The 75mm turntable bearings have been ordered from Simply Bearings & yes I have decided to incorporate them as I am so pleased with their performance on Kinder Scout.
The motors have been sourced locally from Potts in Derby.
The spur gears have been sourced from Muffett Gears.

So chaps this is being done "kitchen table" or should I be more correct ex Caravan camping table & so far so good.
Maybe there will be something to show at AGM time.

A few days ago I thought I would put them end to end at coupling distance & get the tape measure out. Total length 1.65 metres.

Work is progressing on technique for making box section hollow bogie side frames to house the equalising beams & suspension arrangement. If this fails then will resort to plain bogie sides with decorative resin covers, but I am not at that stage yet. Plan A hopefully will not give way to Plan B.

So there we have it. Once I have an axle turned up & the traction motor assembled then will place a photo of same on this thread. Then will have to make another eleven.

Making 2 locos simultaneously feels just like a production line.

To be continued..............

A couple of long poles - and one of those on each foot and I think you'll be able to cross quite wide rivers with those Dave!

My wife Anne is in complete agreement with you Ian, she thinks my interest in diesel is outstripping my love of steam now she has the idea that a marine application could be the revelation we have all been looking for.  8)

I refuse to install a paddling pool in back yard, I have enough on with a 24 feet diameter circle of G3 track.

Looking good Dave I look forward to seeing them double heading  decent length train or even triple headed with kinder scout!!!

I may have mentioned that I intended to have a go at making box section side frames & installing equalising beam suspension in same. Have been confronted with practical difficulties so am resorting to Plan B. Plan A will be resurrected at a later date when EM2 is started, a single loco. The thought of making 4 bogies with this method proved quite daunting so I have given up. :'(

:) Plan B involved drafting out the bogie side frame profile in TurboCAD & sending to a laser cutter for parts to complete 4 bogies for the 2 locos. The intention is to cut them from 5mm mild steel plate. This will accelerate the construction process & with a following wind hopefully something will be able to be on display in February at AGM show.

In the meantime 10000 central body has been modified to accept the chassis baseplate traction floor plate & the 12 volt SLA 2.3 Ah battery at the centre of the loco. Once this has been verified as viable then work will be matched on 10001.

8mm ground mild steel axle material has been received & cut into blanks ready for turning to accept wheels.
Once these are completed & the motor support brackets received back from MEL, the traction motor assemblies will be worked. This involves grinding off the rear stub shafts from the motors, cutting the bosses down from the Muffett gears to meet the space envelope between the wheels.

Parallel to all this the cab profiles are being worked & method for making front & side window frames to shape considered.

The Twins are gestating steadily ..................

Cheers
