Whilst on the subject of Buffers and Pre-Group Railways, I was wondering if the Society would consider expanding its catalogue of track parts to include 9ft Sleepers. These could simply be an elongated version of the existing sleeper/4-bolt chair unit (OK for the LYR &  NER!); or to allow more flexibility a new plain sleeper with holes to initially take the existing individual Chairs (with pins) then if the demand, 2 and 3 bolt individual chairs could be added. If this new sleeper had a suitably positioned web on the underside (like the turnout sleepers) they could be cut to enable 2 & 3 bolt chairs to be also used on 8ft 6" Sleepers, thus greatly expanding the range.

If this is possible then maybe the Society could requests Brandbright to expand their range of excellent 8ft 6" wooden sleepers to also cover both the standard 9ft ones, plus the larger turnout crossing sleepers, which from the visual aspect some may prefer.

I used to use the Brandbright sleepers and I have to admit they are very nice(!) however the delivery delays irked me and I sourced my wood sleepers from "Gilbert Venables" who makes them as "pin money". They are longer than the Brandbright ones and slightly narrower. But, I have been hammering away at them for nearly a year now and despite the smell of the preservative they do seem to look the part. My track work is designed to look like the "Colonial" track work I knew as a boy -rather than the more "pristine" stuff in the UK... I use 25 sleepers per yard -it makes the maths a lot easier!!!

Derek,

I have received your e-mail on this subject and will respond privately later today.  As you might expect, the answer is both yes and no!
