I built a GRS Pannier tank kit a couple of years ago. It runs very well but it is now time for a repaint. I would like to do it in early BR lined black with the cycling lion logo. Can anyone suggest the best source of lining and logo transfers, please.

Thanks

Hello Peter,

Fox Transfers do the BR "Lion & Wheel" totems in both early and late (1956 onward) styles and "Mixed traffic" lining.

For the lining i would strongly suggest using the 0 Gauge lining transfers packs. I have used them on my FYN 2 and W14 terriers as well as W16 Ventnor. The specific company is HMRS lining and a company called Rural Railways (Nick Gillman)will be able to supply the lining packs you want for BR Black lining (Grey / Red) or BR Green (Orange/Black/Orange). The packs are normally £20.00 but you do get an awful lot for your money and the transfers are a joy to work with.
I have used their General purpose transfer lining packs which come in a variety of 9 colours. I have used these on my W32 Bonchurch, W37 Invincible, 73101 The Royal Alex as well as some of the 00 scale models that I model.

On the matter of livery, I would suggest that if you want a "prototypical" finish, then the black livery with "mixed traffic" (i.e.cream/grey/red) would be more appropriate for a 57XX/8750 class than lined green.

It was very rare for this class to be lined at all in BR days(plain black was the norm)  but a few carried the mixed traffic livery for a short time (e.g. 8773). I am not aware of ever having seen one of this class in BR lined green.

The 54XX and 64XX (and possibly some 16XX) classes did carry green "passenger" livery with the orange/black/orange lining but I believe this was later when the post 1956 totem had been introduced (earlier they were either black with mixed traffic lining or plain unlined black.

I was going to base my lining on photos of 9600 I found on Google and attached. Are they an accurate reproduction of the lining actually used on Panniers?

Yes, that matches a photo of 8773 which dates from the early 1950's.

Following on from John C's comment, I have a photo of 8771 at Old Oak Common o 4-3-1956 of the lined black loco. Its got quite good definition too, the pic is in 'The 57XX Engines No 4 : 87XX, 96XX, 97XX' by Richard Derry, published by Irwell Press.

I used to know a Richard Derry who hoped to write railway books.

Thanks John and Ian.

I purchased a lining kit from Peter Spoerer a few months ago and my first attempt did not go well. Time to get it out again for some practice.

Hi Moonraker

I still strongly suggest that you use the HMRS lining packs. The O gauge lining does suit the G3 models as it is not intrusive or too heavy for the siide of the model. People modelling in 0 gauge sometimes use the 00 scale linig for the same reason.
