Title: Martin Evans Eagle - First run
Post by: David S on Dec 19 2015 19:59
Hi everyone.

I recently acquired a Martin Evans designed "Eagle" locomotive, which is loosely based on Irish GNR V class.  The loco is gas fired, with a water tube boiler.  Unfortunately the gas burner and associated fittings as fitted were pretty dangerous and performed poorly.  I suspect the loco was originally intended to be meths fired and the gas burner was probably an afterthought.

I have replaced the home made burner with a BIX 005 ceramic burner using some of the original fittings modified to suit and added a refillable BIX gas tank in the tender (the original used disposable canisters).  The loco also had trouble with some of my tight curves because the lubricator fitted between the frames fouled the front bogie.  I have replaced this with a PM Research adjustable displacement lubricator.

It still needs a little fettling, a slightly longer drawbar making and possibly a new water gauge but otherwise it runs pretty well :)

Well done Dave, it looks and sounds good; AND how refreshing to see a Gauge '3' Live Steam locomotive running at a realistic speed, and not like Japanese Bullet Train!

Thanks Ian, realistic running speed and smoothness are probably the most important things for me.  The loco will run quite a lot slower than in the video but because of some damage to the drawbar in transit it tends to bind up a bit on right hand curves....I should have run it in the opposite direction :)
