Title: A Horse Drawn Carriage
Post by: Jon Nazareth on Sep 25 2024 10:13
I know that Parly trains supply one but I found it difficult to assemble and with all of that fish glue, I found my fingers sticking to the components making the finish a bit messy.  How difficult would a 3D file be to make up, I wonder?

YES - wonderful idea Jon.  I'd be happy to supply drawings and photos of ... well ... it just happens to be an LNWR example.  2-wheeled parcels van maybe?

Well, Mike, a two wheeled parcels van isn't a four wheeled carriage but, it would be far easier to print, I should imagine.  Beggars can't be choosers and anything along these lines would be better than a slap in the face with a wet fish.  I'm after a vehicle that would go on an open carriage truck and there aren't any horse drawn vehicles in G3 out there.

Hobbies do a Hansom cab.  Laser cut wood.  I've never seen one.

I looked on their website but couldn't find anything.

I found this in kit form available from Italy.  It says that it's 1:12 scale but at 8" long, seems rather long to me. I may be mixing up 1:12 scale with dolls house scale which is 1/12 scale.
It's a shame that there isn't anything actually marketed in this country.

This Brougham https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-brougham-carriage-4232
720X720-565382634b623aea65c7f8b7d803f9c4f340a88a.jpg

is very similar to the photo of one built by a Norwich coach-builder and now in care of the Norfolk Museum Service ....

norfolk museum trust.jpg

The main dimensions for  the Norwich Brougham ....see https://www.thecarriagefoundation.org.uk/item/double-bow-fronted-brougham
are  Height: 5ft 9" Length: 10ft 4" Width: 4ft 5"

I have downloaded the STL files for the model which is said to be L 250 x W 120 x H 180 mm
If printed at 56% on all axes, the proportions of the model will be preserved with the correct scale length but width and height  will be slightly less than true scale, based on the Norwich dimensions ..... however I very much doubt the Norwich example was to any"standard" design!

That's very good sleuthing. I think that it would work with a bit of extra detailing and also, get rid of those lamps.

Jon,
Overnight the P1S printed the 56 percent model (yes, I agree the lamps are ugly and didn't print them).
I have quickly assembled and attached is result ... the wheels go round and the steering is pivoted.
I have painted the wheels but nothing else apart from brown leather internal seat.
The front window is glazed.
I have no use for it so it is yours (assuming you want it)!
If so, please confirm your address is same as a few years ago when I last posted to you.
Regards,
John.

That's very kind of you, thank you. I would quite happily have painted it myself. Could I be very cheeky and ask you to print me another?  I really don't mind paying you for them both. Yes, I'm still at the same address and I must reimburse you for the postage as well.

Damned - that's my LNWR Parcels van out of the window then!

Seriously, that's what I call service and shows what 3D printing can do.

Jon,
Yes and no!
The second set of parts is now printing but I won't accept payment.
I have sent a message regarding details.
Regards,
John.
