For some while I have been pondering the scratch build of a passenger tank and the two prototypes which I have been looking at are the GNR Ivatt 4-4-2 and the LT&SR/LMS "Tilbury" 4-4-2.
The governing factor in my choice of the C12 has been the availability of GRS/Slaters wheels of the correct diameters plus the GRS Gresley carriage kits which will nicely complement the loco.
I have ordered an Isinglass drawing of the C12 (in 7mm scale which I shall scan and scale-up to 13.5) and now have to consider how to procure / produce the various fitments.
These locos were fitted with several different chimney and dome combinations over the course of their long existence, so I need to choose a particular loco to model.
There were also differences in bunkers and the first ten built did not have the rounded leading edge to the side tanks.
The most difficult fitments to produce look to be buffers, dome and chimney.
I am looking to employ a steel running plate with laser cut steel main frames, bogie/trailing truck frames, compensation beams, coupling rods and buffer planks.
The main superstructure will be predominantly of sheet brass and a standard GRS Mabuchi motor/gearbox will provide the power.
Well, that's the plan but what is that saying ....... something to do with the "best laid plans of mice and men"?!
