Just to add to the mix, in my search for a London Transport Red aerosol, I came across Fiat Red-orange.  Subjectively it looks OK.  Again, the original changed fairly regularly, from Carmine to scarlet, and sometimes "Lake".  Interesting about the undercoat-maybe I'll do a couple of trials.  I usually use a grey primer-they do a red one as well.  Is the "Pantone" system relevant here?

Not related to BR maroon, but keeping to the topic of colours, any suggestions for Midland wagon grey?

And, since Essery says "there is no such thing as standard Midland wagon grey", is there any reason I can't just use Halford's primer and varnish it?

I seem to remember reading that although there was a paint spec. for new wagons, re-paints were simply painted with a random mix of whatever white/black/grey pigments were to hand, the result being a wide range of tones.
Initially the new wagons were a light grey in photos but appeared much darker later in life.

At Graham's GTG on Saturday we compiled the biggest rake of Mk1 coaches that the owners were happy to run in the rain.  And didn't it rain!  It was then VERY evident that colours were markedly different.  If Graham agrees I can post a short video.

Kingscale maroon was very dark, nearly a muddy brown.
Vauxhall burgundy red was considerably brighter, but looked good all the same.
Rover Damask Red was very bright, especially when used with yellow lining, and looked pretty much the same as the Carmine on the Kingscale "blood and custards"

Without at the moment knowing what undercoat colours were used, my first thoughts are to avoid the Damask Red as it is too bright for BR Maroon.  Using the Vauxhall Burgundy red as a datum, I'm thinking of looking at the Halfords racks for something slightly darker.

Video I mentioned...
John, I can't seem to load a .MOV file through the "add image to post" button

The "add image to post" facility is provided by a third party and caters for images up to 16MB but not video clips.

The usual method used by members is to upload movie clips to YouTube and add a link to the post.

John.

Ok thanks John.  It's already on the Gauge 3 Society and Apple Tree Railway Facebook pages, if anyone wants a look-see.
