There was a Gauge 3 layout on e-bay.  I blinked and it sold for £3,500.  Mostly GRS with 2 locos, 4 carriages and 18 wagons.  No idea what the quality was like.

I don't suppose anyone on here bought it?

It was item  150406727346 if anyone is interested to see the details.

Hello one and all,

I have just discovered the Gauge 3 Society, and indeed this forum. I should probably join the society formally too. I actually was the guy who bought the layout on ebay. I have to say the photos do not do it justice! Most of the rolling stock bodies have been scratch-built to a very reasonable standard indeed using GRS underframes

My plan is to install it as an indoor layout to keep me occupied on those cold winter nights, when I can't play trains outside with my G45 layout.

My background is having played with OO and O gauges I moved to G45 live steam in 1996, but now having seen live steamers in G64, it was too tempting. Incidentally I also have bought the GRS live steam Prairie from Sunset Valley Railroad in the US, that is still showing as being for sale on your club's for sale section... I wonder who should I talk to to get this updated?

Incidentally I am the "Buildings & Structures" columnist for Garden Rail Magazine, as well as being the Hon. Pres. of the Wisbech Model Railway Society. If anyone is interested in something a little smaller than gauge 3, please feel free to drop into www.wmrc.weebly.com and click on the link to The Dovecote Light Railway to see our little railway - built in just 7 weeks - with a lot of help from my friends!!! :)

Thanks, Mark Thatcher

Hello Mark,

Welcome to the G3 Forum and congratulations upon becoming the owner of an impressive looking G3 layout. Hopefully, we shall soon be able to welcome you as a member of The Gauge 3 Society.
Our AGM is in just four weeks time at Milton Keynes and I am sure you would find the trade stands fascinating. Why not come along as a 'guest' and prospective new member before making up your mind?
If you wish, I can ask our Membership Secretary to send a formal invitation.

You may even find something to write up in 'Garden Rail'....G3 could do with a bit more publicity!

I note that you have purchased the GRS live steam Prairie tank and will remove it from the website (I am the Society's Webmaster).

Regards,
John Candy (in a village near Ely).

My fellow Members, ask not what your Society can do for you, ask what you can do for your Society.

Hello John,

Wow - that was quick and thanks for the warm welcome. I live in a village near Wisbech - Emneth... in the former home of the Rev. Awdry of Thomas the Tank Engine fame, so we are almost neighbours. I would love to join and it probably makes sense to do so in April and take the 1/2 year sub until October.

I would be delighted to give this society a mention (in fact I already have done as I have just submitted my first article on Gauge 3 to GRM, on my recent build of the GRS GWR Flying Banana kit).

What is the date of your AGM please? I would love to come over, although as far as purchasing is concerned as you can imagine I am a little spent up at the mo!

Kind Regards,

Mark Thatcher

Hi Mark,

Welcome to the Gauge 3 Society.  I must admit that after a sharp intake of breath, if you cost out the locos and stock on the layout, let alone the track and structures, the unit price is actually quite good.  It just sounds like a lot of money all in one go!

The meeting is on 27th February from 10.00am.  I used to work in Wisbech and live in Milton Keynes, so know the journey is not bad.  All the major Gauge 3 suppliers will be there and also members are encouraged to bring models along to display, so there should be plenty to see and lots of people to chat with.  I'm usually worn out by closing time.

Oh, and there's no pressure to join the Society - we just know you'll want to!

Hope you can make it and look forward to meeting you.

My fellow Members, ask not what your Society can do for you, ask what you can do for your Society.

Hi Mark,

It would certainly be good to see some more G3 articles in Garden Rail but the Society Newsletter would also be very interested to hear about your new indoor layout. Hope to see you at the AGM. Welcome.

Nothing's ever Easy - At least the first time around.

Thank you Mike John & Ian for such great comments, helpful advice, and of course I will have to join now! (Mike) I thought the layout was pretty good, 150ft of track, 6 points and all the scenics and baseboards would have cost quite a bit on their own. Currently I am very busy embellishing the stock - loco lamps, coal loads, vac pipes et al. I am working through each piece one at a time otherwise I think I would become easily phased by the amount I want/need to do.

(Ian) I would be delighted to feature the re-build of this line in the newsletter, although Tag Gorton [Ed Garden Rail] may want a series also so I would have to put a different spin on it for you, but would be happy to do so.

(John) Thanks for the AGM link - it's in the diary and I hope to shake hands with you all then.

Best regards to all

Mark
