Corrugated steel end 5-plank?

LMS D1839

Looking at the tool I produced to make the patterns for the corrugated ends of the all steel vans to D1828, it occurred to me that the same tool might be used to produce the patterns for ends of open wagons with corrugated ends. So far as the LMS was concerned, there was a batch of 100 AVB-fitted wagons built to D1839 in 1933 but no further corrugated ended opens were built by the LMS / BR(M) until 1946 to 48 to D2110 and D2150.

A quick check with the GA drawings showed that the pitch/spacing of the end corrugations was identical for both vans and open wagons.
Whereas the corrugations on the van ends stand proud of the ends, on opens the corrugations were inset into the ends but the tool would be equally suitable.

D1839 ran on a steel-underframe of 10ft WB with four shoe brakes and ordinary wagon springs (not the J-hanger type employed on the 8-shoe clasp brake diagrams).

Since the sides are almost identical (apart from the corner plates) to the D1666 wagon (which is a current Flexikit) very little work would be involved in producing patterns for the sides.

Similar ends were fitted to LMS shock-absorbing wagons and BR built many thousands of similar opens and the end could be made available as a "spare" for anyone wishing to convert other suppliers' kits or scratchbuild.

Anyone interested?

Could well be. I've built one using a GRS chassis and vac formed ends along with some castings they did for me not spot on but close enough.

Was the corrugated end to a standard design? Andy Boothman gave me a drawing of a BR tube wagon dia 1/448, and I've been seriously thinking about building one, I went to Quainton Road on Monday specifically to check out the one they have.
The sides seem to be 3' high with seven 'slots'.

Geoff,

The end I propose does have 7 corrugations.
I will look at the BR drawing later to be certain it is the same as the 5-plank.

I have looked at the BR tube wagon details and the end is similar to the proposed 5-plank with the addition of two vertical T-iron stanchions, in the manner as applied to planked ends.
