Old wooden kits

It certainly looks a step up from the average laser-cut wooden kits around today.
Very nicely shaped parts - espeially the wlanut ones.
But how much longer before we can get our mitts on one? - I've got a birthday coming up and wife keeps asking what's on my 'wish-list'!

You and me both Andy.  Tony had trouble with the wood, the first plywood being completely finished and then started to warp.  Second batch of ply did the same.  I imagine at that stage Tony regretted ever agreeing to make them!  However, he's making great progress now.

And, he's a jolly nice chap which I think always helps.

Nice looking wagon Mike. Never seen walnut used before (that I know of) but the colour contrast would look good if the wagon was being simply varnished or waxed for display purposes.

The birch plywood he's using looks to be a reasonable quality, although I cannot see the 'ply' used. Even so I was surprised to hear that some had warped. I use 3mm thick 6-ply from my 'local' model shop (it's only 18 miles away!) which he stocks for his aero and marine modelling customers. It's not that cheap (about £9 a sheet and that was a year or so ago) but a 36" x 8" sheet goes a long way in G3 wagon terms and I've never had any problems with movement.

Nothing's ever Easy - At least the first time around.

I've asked Tony Riley if he would consider doing a wooden kit for a MR 14ft 11in over headstocks, 9ft wheelbase covered goods wagon of the types D356/D357/D359/D376 of which there were many built (see Essery, Midland Wagons, pp 121-128). These would use similar materials to the LSWR wagons Tony is doing for Mike Williams.

He's giving it some thought, but if he was to proceed (late 2105/early 2016) then there would be a minimum order of 10 and the price would be 'around' £40. The kit would be like the ones he does for G1 (except larger!) and include the body, roof, underframe and plastic mouldings for the strapping details etc. The buyer would have to provide the wheels, running gear, buffers, couplings, etc.

If anyone's interested then please let me know

cheers

Thinking about this a bit more, does anyone know who the Andy aka Beatty 169 is/was on RMweb. He posted a photo of a Midland wagon in G3 he had enlarged from his own G1 kit.  see  http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/63241-first-effort-in-gauge-3/

There was also a fella making a GWR Toad brake van in acrylic laser cut.

Ian, Richard and Ian: - can we just let the Tony, who is working on these wagons finish the LSWR Open first Please. Then ask him to start on a second prototype!

Ian,
I, for one, applaud your initiative. I hope it goes ahead. Two please.
Thank you.

Yes - he is Andy Mould of http://www.woodburymodels.co.uk/.
I talked to him at several G1 shows and he kept promising to give me a price for a G3 kit but never did. Then he said he was sticking with G1 until he had established more of a presence in that market.

I agree with Ian (The Pirate) to some extent - please let Tony deliver the LSWR wagons first.
But having said that, I'd take at least one of the MR wagons provided they are correct in their details. Providing the necessary drawings to make them so is not a problem - just ask!

I don't have a digital copy of the GA yet, so will check details on the original in the next few weeks.

When/if Andy has confirmed that the model is accurate then I would be willing to take one.

John.
My fellow Members, ask not what your Society can do for you, ask what you can do for your Society.

The LSWR wagon kits are nearing completion.  Here's the first body finished and I should receive the batch next week.  Once I have one assembled with all the fittings I'll be able to confirm the cost, then take firm orders and dispatch.  I hope that will be in three to four weeks.

I like those Mike, could be in the market for a couple of those.

Is this to be a one piece resin casting, or do we actually get the bits of wood etc? And are those real nuts and bolts?
(whichever it is I want one)
Geoff.

MikeWilliams

Geoff,

No resin in sight!  You get the actual pieces of wood, which have been cut and "scribed" using slitting saws on a lathe.  The bolt and strapping detail (sorry "washer plates"!) are plastic injection mouldings made specially for this wagon.  I hope my standard axleguards, buffers and brakes will all suit, and indeed the wooden parts have been made with holes etc the correct size to fit them.  But that's what I need to confirm before releasing the kits, and of course write the instructions.
