Scratch built bridge

Here is a picture of a bridge that I've almost completed. I say almost as I intend making up a timber deck for the track to sit on instead of the two long flat bars you see. It is made up of aluminium sections bought from MVL Bridges, at a very reasonable cost, and held together with brass and copper rivets, 10BA brass nuts and bolts and threaded rivets. Threading rivets isn't much fun but there wasn't another option, it had to be done. I set the rivets with a rivet squeezer and where space didn't permit it's use, I used threaded rivets for the look of the thing and brass nuts and bolts where they wouldn't show. The bridge is roughly 4' long and about 9" high, the latter being dictated by the height of the chimney on my yet to be completed version of Lion. The wagon is a scratch built early LBSCR open C1865.

The bridge is finished now, phew. The bridge proper has been coated firstly with an etch primer and then Halfords red primer. The red primer will be it's final coat/colour and I don't intend to anything else with it. I was going to apply some linseed oil to the deck but couldn't find any and so, I've given it a wipe over with some olive oil simply to highlight the boards for these pictures. I'm happy with the way that it has come out but I think that it would have saved a lot of angst if I'd just gone out and bought one from MVL Bridges

Jon, excellent!, please could you upload a link to the MVL Bridges website as I have been trying to find some aluminium angle to upgrade an old GRS deck truss bridge.

I found that the ali sections from MLV were very reasonable. If you want to buy pieces over a metre long the, Michael is happy to supply.
