Gentlemen,

I have recently joined G3Soc. My particular interest includes emus. While I am happy to scratch build the unit itself, I could use some advice about a G3 motor bogie. The vehicles have 3'-0" wheels set at wheelbases as short as 7'-3", so I suspect they are not available off the shelf. I am looking at using Slaters 3ft wagon wheels (spoked are correct), but can anyone suggest a source of suitable gears to fit the Slaters axle and a 2mm motor shaft.

Many thanks for any help you can give.

Tony.

If you read the entries under the title "Diesel Bogie" you will find what you are looking for. If you can supply the top speed of the EMU/DMU that you would like it to travel at -I can produce a spec for suitable gear train for you.

Thanks Ralph. You have done a lot of work on this. All I need now is to source the bits...

Kind regards, Tony.

Suitable motors and gears can be found at:

Technobots: http://www.technobots.co.uk/
MFA Como Drills: http://www.mfacomodrills.com/
Muffet Gears: http://www.muffettgears.co.uk/
HPC Gears: http://www.hpcgears.com/

Plastic gears such a Nylon and Hostaform, (AKA Delrin), are probably the most useful for G3 scale. If we were pulling people then brass and steel would be better... MOD 0.7 and MOD 1.0 are the most suitable tooth sizes.
