Derby goods yard, 1920

This time I've borrowed a picture from this website https://suengineshed.com/cotton-end-yard/ where this is said to be Cotton End Yard, Northampton.  However, it also appeared on RMWEB which suggests the more likely location of Derby St Marys, and the date 29th April 1920:

The wagon nearest the camera is Rhondda and Swansea Bay Railway and I am amazed to see how they loaded barrels onto such a low sided wagon, some standing, others laying down.  I assume they were tied and sheeted before it started moving.  It is quite a modern wagon with steel underframe, yet has the L&Y-style left handed brake lever.  Nice view of the capping irons on top of the sides and ends.  The strapping has an odd mix of rivets and nuts on the outside (maybe due to the steel underframe?), some of which are hexagonal and others I think are square.  The axleboxes are similar to the usual GWR "OK" design.

I don't recognise either of the wagons coupled to the R&SBR one and suspect they are both private owners?

On the track behind, left to right are 5-plank wagons from GWR, Midland (with Ellis axleboxes) and GER, plus an older private owner with four wide planks which makes it taller than the 5-plank wagons next to it, and it has raised ends too.  It is from J&G Wells Ltd, Eckington, Sheffield.

Behind that is a train of vans, left to right

I think this is probably Midland?  If so its the smaller van like the Tony Riley kit a few years ago rather than the larger Slaters 10ton type.

SE&CR with roof ventilators.  I believe this is to Southern Railway Diagram 1421.  So far as I am aware, apart from a small batch of open wagons made by Tony Riley 25 years ago, no kits or parts for SE&CR wagons and vans have ever been available in Gauge 3.  If anyone has such a Tony Riley wagon they don't want please let me know!

GWR iron Mink van.  We do a kit for that.

GWR wooden Mink van.  Similar to our GER van kit, Andy Mould does a wooden body for this type.

So a variety of wagons and vans, many absolutely typical of their owning companies and showing real variety, just like our models should!

Nice picture, Mike, and one that I don't recall seeing before.
Definitely Derby St Mary's - a building that I have cycled past every weekday for the past twenty-something years, until COVID came along.
I'll comment on the wagons later.

Is that Midland 5-plank a D299 like the Slaters kit Andy?

If so then kits are, or were, available for over half of the nine wagons identifiable.  And some say Gauge 3 is a minority interest with little trade support!

Judging by the length between the wagon end and the axleguard, I'd agree that it is the shorter Midland D299. But even if it were the longer D302, that is also available in G3 as a body-only kit from Andy Mould at Woodbury Models.
