Has anyone with a G1 interest come across Tony Riley kits?
I'm interested to know what materials are used, how easy to build, and whether they may be a potential source for buying a design to scale up.
The one reference I've found on-line suggests they are highly detailed models.

They are excellent kits, made from scored plywood to simulate planking for the sides and ends, and quality hardwood for the framing. They also include the all important detailed plastic mouldings for the ironwork plus drawing and prototype info. In all he's probably produced about 30 types over the years. The builder has to supply all underframe stuff such as W-irons, axleboxes, leafsprings, brake gear, buffers and wheels but there's plenty of this stuff around in G3.

I'm sure Tony would be prepared to sell the rights to produce these in G3 together with the dimensions and prototype info

Thanks Ian.

Sounds like a route worth investigating further, once my current 2 wagon projects reach the shiny brass etch stage!

What does "sell the rights" mean in this context?  Scribing some plywood and cutting strapping is pretty standard, so just what "rights" are involved?

I agree Mike, I looked at the website and could probably find most of the 'drawings' and information in already published material. Making strapping can be fun, but that's because I have to turn a 'blind eye' to my scratch-building! (Look at 'Bromley' closely to see what I mean!)

Ian, you're a better man than me, as I can't find a web site.

But, from comments by others, these appear to be Brandbright-like sets of wooden parts with separate strapping, to make the detailed body.  If that is right, then is there scope for a co-operative amongst members to club together and have parts made?  Tony Riley may want to quote for the work, but others could be approached too.  With a circular saw and fine linisher (neither of which I have) it would not be difficult, nor expensive, and something like an RCH standard open wagon should have wide appeal - maybe a 1907 Gloucester-built 6-plank like Slaters kits in the smaller scales?

However, laser cutting might be an alternative method, so has anyone actually bought and assembled the parts from Model Engineers Laser or Peter Woods?

Ooops - didn't mean to stir a hornets nest here.....

I simply came across a little-advertised maker of G1 kits (mainly of quite interesting pre-grouping vehicles) and wondered if there was anything (e.g. CAD designs) that could easily be scaled up for G3 use.
I haven't found a website, but there is a chap who does transfers for the Tony Riley kits that lists them on his site

And yes, it is quite possible that others might do it better / cheaper - but the first stage is to understand what a starting point could be.

That's all I was trying to do......

Highland Railway sheep wagons look interesting.......... how about a kit for the "Jones Goods" to haul them!

John.
My fellow Members, ask not what your Society can do for you, ask what you can do for your Society.

And a great idea it was/is Andy.  If you can contact Tony Riley it would indeed be a good idea to ask what he's prepared to do.  Maybe he'd make a set of wooden parts if we can get together an order.

And if not, maybe we could do something similar ourselves as a trial?
