Hargate Models are trying the Gauge 3 market, with a laser cut ply body / chassis kit. the 'chassis' is constructed from 3mm ply, two layers making it 6mm thick, the body from 1.5mm ply, again two engraved layers giving detail internally and externally, and the strapping, which is done in 0.8mm ply. The cost is £37.50 plus postage. hargatecw@gmail.com

here's the first sample, the production kits will have strapping to fit on externally.

This should be good and well timed with the very nice Perfect World kit going off the market.  Its another 1923 design with fixed ends (no end door) so good for local coal merchants.  I'm not sure whether it has 6 planks or 7.  Maybe they are doing both and put the wrong ends in the kit?  Would be good if they do indeed make a range.

If they are having trouble finding information I'd be happy to see out drawings and photos for them.

they have only trialed g3 after i saw them on ebay doing 16mm, and pestered them to try it. i'm sure of they sell they may consider other types. it's just meant to be a greneric wagon, for those who are not too fussy about applying rivets etc and want a quick build. ash

I like that.... whose chassis is suitable ?

AshleyW

i requested lewis not to have any underframe or to have the sole bars at set interlocking position, so to allow builders to use what ever chassis they choose (although i suspect he can do full underframe if you req) . so you could use peter korzilious chassis (like in last newsletter) or mike williams flexi chassis kit (which has all you need and you could use part of the underframe detail) or his other chassis components as you req. i guess grs may do chassis parts too, but i have no knowledge of such parts.

incidentally hargate models, when they do their 16mm kits actually have the w -irons and vee hangers and brake gear all from lazer cut ply. but i thought that no one in gauge 3 would want wooden w-irons and also they would not stand up to the rigours of rough and tumble of garden railway life.

but here's a computer image of body with w -irons just for demonstration !

i hope he gets a few orders , so as to make g3 part of his regular buisness. then who knows, once he does, then we can think about asking about other types of wagon?

Hmmmm, as pointed out by Mike W, they seem to have mixed and matched the plank count on the sides and ends - however, if I've counted right, the inside sides appear to be eight plank.

So underframe configuration seems to be the least of their worries.

Doesn't fill me with confidence......

AshleyW

i can advise him to sort that no problem. which is preffered 7 or 8

AshleyW

i have requested a change so inner and outer have both same number of planks. i'm certain he will sort that out very quickly.

MikeWilliams

Personally Ashley, I think solebars would be useful, then builders can add all the bits below that.  I appreciate its a generic wagon at a low price and people can add detail, but would be nice if the dimensions and planks were right, to increase the market.  I repeat that happy to look into drawings if they wish.

solebars are included. just not at set dimensions apart. i'll mention about looking at the drawings, ta ash

Much better.  One thing which you may or may not want to consider is the curb rail - the "plank" at the bottom of the sides - usually has a rebate on the ends around the headstocks.  That lowers the whole body and means on the ends the bottom "plank" is narrower and on the inside you can't see it at all.  Here's the RCH drawing and you want RCH1002 but make sure you follow the one with wooden underframe as the steel underframed wagons had quite a few differences.

the lads been busy, here's updates today

Seven planks on the end, seven on the outside side & seven on the inside side..... better than the first shot, I believe the phrase is, 'getting there'. Got to admit it looks good.

Peter Korzilius & Andy Mould must be looking over their shoulders.....
